Re: Spring 2016 | Page 91

pub uses ingredients sourced from local suppliers to create a seasonal menu as well as a few, more adventurous one offs such as kangaroo steak, zebra and python. In 2013 the local farmer Charlie Hughes took over Southview Farm, one of three in the village, and carried on the business which has been in his family for three generations. Charlie developed his shed, from which he sold eggs, and milk from his Friesian herd, into a thriving farm shop. In the short time it has been open the shop has won multiple awards for the fresh produce from the farm including beef from their cattle and raw milk which is not available from anywhere beyond the farm gates. My favourite place in Bury is the wharf of the river Arun. As a child I spent many days building dens in the fields and fishing in the streams, the more adventurous of my friends built a canoe and would swim in the river. The river has the second fastest current in the country so I never dared go in. I often walk along the tow path to Amberley or Arundel. As a teenager, with no other mode of transport out of the village this was the best way to get to the railway station, now it provides for a relaxing stroll to the pub.
