Re: Spring 2016 | Page 15

After that I phoned around a couple of agents, did a little bit of research of TV agents. There was one guy called John Roseman. He owned the Roseman Organisation and he sent me an email and he said, “right, Kevin, you’ve got something. I’m not really too sure what it is but come down and I’d like to have a chat.” So, my appointment with him was like in a week’s time but in the meantime there was an audition in the Stage. Sky One were looking for presenters for a programme called Boiled Egg and Soldiers and anybody could apply. So I went down to Sky, auditioned for that all day. There were about 500 people getting whittled down, down to just two guys and two girls. I got down to the final five and they called us in and I ended up getting the job. I did that with Adam Garcia who is now really famous. He’s a great dancer, Australian. He’s one of the judges on Got to Dance but he does musicals and everything. Then I went down to my meeting with this agent who says; “Yeah, Kevin, great to meet you. I don’t know what it is, but there is something about you but you know, give me some time.” And I said, “okay, can I just ask you one question?” And he said, “what is it?” So I told him I’d like him to look after me and asked him if I had a job would he be able to represent me. He said of course he would but he had no idea what I was just about to tell him. I said, “Well, I’ve just got this contract with Sky One. It’s for 12 months; it’s for a breakfast show, every morning.” He opened his drawer, pulled out a contract and he went, “this is what I can do for you. Let me represent you.” So he took me on. From that programme I realised that presenting was what I wanted to do. It’s what I’m comfortable with, uses all my skills and I like talking to people. I embarked on my TV career then. And from that I just went on from doing auditions for different shows. It was really good doing the Boiled Egg and Soldiers Show because it was live TV; it was bit like The Big Breakfast. It was more of a magazine show and we had pop groups on there and comedians, it was a great show actually. JE: You must have met quite a few famous people, have you ever been star struck? KD: In short, no. I’ve been in awe of many people but star struck, no. Maybe a little bit nervous to talk to people but not necessarily star struck. JE: So, who would you say is the biggest star that you have either worked with or interview? I met the Queen a couple of times and she was absolutely lovely. When I was in Starlight Express, Michael Jackson came to see the show, he was a huge fan and he came back stage. KD: I met the Queen a couple of times and she was absolutely lovely. When I was in Starlight Express, Michael Jackson came to see the show, he was a huge fan and he came back stage. The part that I played was one of the Rockies, we were the cool guys. We did a little rap in the show and we did all the backflips and somersaults on stage. Michael Jackson loved that element of the show. I met him after the show and he was amazing. I was just in awe of him being in his presence because, for me, Michael Jackson was untouchable. There are not many people that can get near him and he was standing in front of me and I was having this conversation with him. It was amazing to meet him. Michael Jackson, at that time, was relevant to me. I’ve met Tom Cruise; he was great, really funny and really charming. I’ve met loads of other people but, for me, that was relevant to me. JE: Let’s now talk about Blue’s Clues. KD: The job came up through my agent. He said: “They’re looking for a children’s presenter for a brand new show called Blue’s Clues. It’s an American show. They’re looking for a boy or a girl. Do you want to go for the audition?” I didn’t know any of the history of the show or anything. So, I went to audition. They saw 100 guys for this role. They chose 40 out of that 100 and I was one of the 40. So, we had to the screen test and then they took all of the show reels and they sent it round to schools and colleges all over the UK and they got the kids to decide who their favour ite was. So, the poll came back. My agent 15
