Trevor
Sorbie
COVER STORY
Interview
He is probably one of the UK’s
best-known hairdressers and
was once asked to be The
Queen’s stylist. He’s mingled
with the stars including
Sting, Grace Jones and
Paul McCartney but Trevor
Sorbie doesn’t want to be
remembered for any of that.
He wants his legacy to be his
charity My New Hair, which
provides a wig styling service
for those affected by cancer.
Tell us about where you grew up?
I was born in Scotland and I was 11
when I left Paisley. I lived in what they call
a tenement building - another word for
a block of crummy flats - and we shared
an outside toilet with the building. Every
Friday night the tin bath came out and
me and my brother used to share it. At
Christmas we had mince and potatoes.
It was a very modest life – I mean, really
modest. I often wonder what would have
happened to me if I had stayed there and
I can’t think what would have happened.
I’d probably have ended up in a gang of
10
thugs and in prison! But I’ve been back,
obviously, several times, and it hasn’t
changed at all. You know, some places
move and they develop but Paisley is
just as it was, except there are a load
of young kids hanging about on street
corners. It is not a very safe place. If you
fly to Glasgow Airport you’re actually
landing in Paisle
