The remainder of our stay was taken up
with sightseeing (and getting lost). St
Mark’s Square is obviously the main
attraction in Venice but it was pretty
empty in the winter months. The focal
point is the Basilica di San Marco which
is breath-taking and quite overwhelming.
Unfortunately the majority of the
outside was clad in scaffolding during
our stay but the opulence still burst
through. The church was originally the
Chapel of the Doge but became the
city’s cathedral in 1807 where many of
the important ceremonies were held.
Inside you will find scenes of the Old
and New Testament and information
about the history of the church. It is
well worth spending an hour or two
getting lost in the magnificence of the
