Photo Courtesey of Phoebe Howard www.phoebehoward.net All said, the results speak for themselves and let’s not forget there are plenty of effects that can be achieved with this technique so don’t limit yourself to thinking you have to paint the entire room. Think about single feature walls, chimney breasts, stripes, woodwork or key pieces of furniture. A similar look can be achieved by applying several coats of high gloss paint or using a varnish or polyurethane top coat. Although this won’t create the exact sheen of a lacquer it is a good compromise should your budget or patience not stretch to the real thing. To scale down the effect further think about p airing matt and gloss finishes together to striking effect as seen here, the walls have been painted in standard emulsion whilst the pattern has been hand painted in gloss in the same tone giving an unexpected playfulness and reflection of light. Stripes work equally well and are even easier to achieve and are just as striking. So a corner has been turned, it’s time we started getting a little creative with our walls, let’s welcome a little of the glitz and the glamour of 2013 into our homes. Don’t leave your walls lacking, get lacquering! By Ben Hillman benhillman.co.uk interior design llman.co.uk 97
