They needed English as a second language because they wanted to pass the British Council exams in English to be able to come to Britain to study. We were teaching to give people the opportunity to come here to study and then go back again. I was there for two years, and it was a very unspoiled place. I think now it’s actually on a tourist trail - in those days you didn’t see tourists at all. And there were four VSO volunteers. I think two were working in a library and two of us were teaching. There was quite a large contingent of Ford Foundation people from America, about ten of them. And that was quite handy because their weekly allowance was greater than we were paid a month. So if you went out with the Americans, you got looked after because they had so much more money than we did.
