Ealing to Peggy Hall is the Head of Probate, Trusts & Wills and she shares with us some stories of her life, her work and her travels. I finished school in Ealing, at a grammar school for girls, when we still had a grammar schools nd then went from there to the university in Southampton. I did an English degree - I had wanted to do law when I was at school but in those days, which was the early 70s, there was still the very strong class thing and I was actually told, people from my background do not do law, which I don’t think these days would happen. I’m sure it wouldn’t happen. So law was always there in the background, but I thought ‘oh well’ - you take guidance from people who are writing your references. So I went off and did an English degree at Southampton University, because Southampton have a very good law faculty and I thought initially that if I go to Southampton I might be able to change to a different degree subject all together. But then I was flattered into staying in the English department because someone said: “You’ll probably get a first” which, of course, I didn’t. Once I got an English degree I thought what do I do after that? I didn’t actually think hugely about a career because I decided to voluntary service overseas (VSO) in Indonesia. As soon as I graduated, which I think was probably about 1975, that’s what I did. And I was there for two years teaching on an island which is now called Sulawesi. The capital of that is Pandan, and I was based there working in almost a university - an adult setting, teaching all sorts of professionals including the army and even the police. via Sulawesi Eastbourne 21
