PLAYING THE LOTO...

Words: River Dave Photos: Tommy Gun Images

Two Days ago I was talking to Vern Gilbert of West Coast Drives on the phone and I asked him "Who's going to LOTO this year from the West Coast?" Vern is a long time friend, and about as straight a shooter as you will find if you want to know the "in's and out's" of what is going on behind the scenes of the Fastest boats on the West Coast. I rattled off some of the usual suspects that I know about, and made mention of a few of the setup changes so as to pretend like I'm in the know and break the ice when as usual he stopped me dead in my tracks.. "Dave, the contender for this year is John Roth's 388. This damn thing is an ANIMAL. Come on by Thursday and I'll tell you all about it." That's about all I needed to hear so I ended the conversation with "Do me a Favor and pull it outside so we can get some pics, and we will see you Thursday Afternoon." I shot Tom Leigh a text that said "Skater Shoot at WCD Thursday." Which he promptly responded too with "What is WCD?" I am going to come back to that later in the Kirk Steven's article.

We arrived on Thursday afternoon to find the boat sitting out front next to Roth's Hauler.
