The Gospels tell us that Jesus grew up in
Nazareth . He was a good and obedient son to
Mary and Joseph . Over the years , he grew in
age and wisdom .
When Jesus was about thirty years
old , he left Nazareth to begin the work
his Father sent him to do . Jesus went to
the Jordan River to be baptized by John
the Baptist . John baptized people and
told them to repent for their sins . John
prepared people for the coming of the
Messiah , the Savior God promised
to send .

How would you have reacted to witnessing Jesus ’ baptism ?

When Jesus approached John ,
John said , “ You should baptize me .”
Jesus replied , “ It is all right , we are to
fulfill God ’ s plan .”
Jesus allowed John to baptize him .
When Jesus came up from the water , the
heavens opened . And the Holy Spirit
descended upon Jesus in the form of a
dove . A voice from the heavens said ,
“ This is my beloved Son , with whom
I am well pleased .”

After his Baptism , Jesus began to preach
about God . Often he taught in the synagogues ,
where the Jewish people gathered to study the
Scriptures and to pray .
[ Jesus ] came to Nazareth , where he
had grown up , and went according to his
custom into the synagogue on the sabbath
day . He stood up to read and was handed
a scroll of the prophet Isaiah . He unrolled
the scroll and found the passage where it
was written :
“ The Spirit of the Lord is upon me ,
because he has anointed me
to bring glad tidings to the poor .
He has sent me to proclaim liberty to captives and recovery of sight to the blind , to let the oppressed go free , and to proclaim a year acceptable to the Lord .”
Rolling up the scroll , he handed it back
to the attendant and sat down , and the
eyes of all in the synagogue looked intently
at him . He said to them , “ Today this scripture
passage is fulfilled in your hearing .”
?
What do you think Jesus
wanted the people in
the synagogue to
understand ?
