CALLED from GOD

Each one of us has a vocation — a calling from God to live our faith in Christ in a certain way . Your vocation is that calling from God to meet the needs of your family , friends , world and the Church . Your first and most basic call is to love : love God , love yourself , and love others as Jesus taught . This love can be lived out through marriage and family life , the single life , the consecrated life as a member of a religious community , or as an ordained minister .
The word vocation comes from a Latin word that means “ a calling .” Throughout our lives , God calls each of us to follow him in a special way . How we respond to God ’ s call is up to us . To help you respond to this call it is important for you to discover your gifts and talents . This will help you discern the best way for you to serve God and others .

Discernment is a prayerful way to gain insight into God ’ s plan for you and your vocation in life . This is an ongoing process . Here are a few steps to help you discern :
n Set aside quiet time . Ask the Holy Spirit to open your mind and heart to what God is saying to you about your life .
n Be open to possibilities . Consider the possibility that God may be calling you to be ordained , to live in religious life , to be married , or to be single .
n Talk to people : a married couple , a religious brother or sister , a deacon , priest , bishop , or a single person .
n Value the unique person God created you as : your personality , your gifts , your talents . Think about the best way you can use your gifts and talents to live a holy life .
Remember that discernment is an ongoing process . The more time you give to it , the better you will become at discovering who God is calling you to be .
