The 2017 school year is halfway to completion and soon the graduating class of 2017 will make its way out of our high schools. Your NMASBO organization has once again committed to helping the graduating class get a strong foothold into the future. By the end of this school year, NMASBO will have awarded approximately $11,500 to students who will be graduating from a public or charter school in New Mexico and have made a commitment to attend a higher educational institution in New Mexico.

Each year, NMASBO sends out a request to high school counseling offices to make available the Committee-approved application and guidelines to their graduating classes. Last year, the Committee read approximately 80 applications and awarded some very outstanding students with scholarships worth $1,500 each. The Committee also honored one especially deserving student the Joni Heinsohn memorial scholarship worth $2,500. The scholarships are a one-time award and are given to young men and women who have expressed a desire to further their education at a college or university in New Mexico.

The scholarship process allows us the opportunity to not only give back to the students in our communities, but also provide an opportunity to gain a better understanding of why we get up and go to work each day. The Scholarship Committee continues to seek volunteers to serve with us. Currently, the Committee has strong representation from different sized districts and charter schools throughout the state. Thank you to our Committee members: Patrick Kelly, Bonnie Hoke, Sandra Heinsohn, Kimberly Stone, Sandra Ashcraft, Sarah Marquez, Jeannie Harris, Claudia Martinez, Sherrita Fluhman and Teresa Scott. Your dedication and commitment to this most important endeavor is much appreciated.

Please be sure to let your high school seniors know the NMASBO scholarship is available until Friday, February 10, and more information is available at nmasbo.org/hsscholarships.
