Shape the delay
Use filters to give your delay character. If you don’t you will find that the tails will phase with the original sound. I normally use a high and low pass filter with a bit of resonance. With Timeless you can also
change the filter character and slope, in this scenario I’ve left it on “Gentle” with a 12db slope.
Mechanimal launched its first live in October 2009 and has been
blasting full power trance music around the globe since. Now with
over 20 successful releases and ever growing experience Mechanimal released its debut album rocking dancefloors worldwide!
Psychedelic e-Mag catches up with Mechanimal for this month’s music production tutorial:
Programming a clean delay using FabFilter Timeless 2
Sounds can get clogged up with delays, especially when you have long feedback tails. This becomes a
real problem when you need to hear details such as lyrics in a vocal. In this tutorial I’ll show you hozw
to get a strong delay without compromising the detail of the original sound.
Sound choice
Either program a synth part or import a sample such as a vocal.

Modulation
Now you have programmed your delay it’s time to clean up the signal. Select “Add Source”
then “New Envelope Follower”. Now drag the envelope follower source to “Wet Mix”.
Insert the effect
Add FabFilter Timeless 2 onto an insert and select the “Clean” preset.
Final settings
Invert the signal [Red] to negative and increase “Wet Level” to taste [Blue]. The envelope
follower works like a side chain: whenever the original signal plays, the delay tail ducks thus
creating a clean source with full delay tail. Experiment by assigning the envelope follower to
different parts of the plugin.
Insert the effect
Lock both the feedback and the time [Red], Increase the feedback [Blue] and choose a delay
time [Pink]. To get separate feedback and delay times for L & R unlock and tweak to taste.
