UP P ER SCHO O L C L A S S E S ARTS Mission: To provide students with a deeper appreciation of all creative expressions. The Arts and New Media Department provides students with opportunities to acquire comprehensive knowledge about the visual and performing arts. A cornerstone of this curriculum is the opportunity students will have to gain experiential skills within their communities, develop a new aesthetic and a culture of excellence. Every student at Thornton Academy is required to complete 1 credit in the Arts for graduation. Listed in this section you will find myriad classes that qualify for the requirement - which is not limited to Visual Arts I. The Arts Center has a wide range of exciting arts courses which generally begin with an introductory course, and then progress to studio and advanced classes in each arts discipline. Specific prerequisites are required for advanced art disciplines and may only be waived with special permission from the Arts Center faculty. Check the prerequisites for each class carefully before deciding on a course of study. Arts courses have assignments in addition to class work and may include homework, materials collection, research, writing, drawing, practicing, rehearsing and working in the studios before and after school. Investment of time outside of class is expected from arts students in all areas.
