OPENING EVENT
Walker Evans took documentary beyond the
mere recording of the factual and into the
deepest realms of the human spirit. Modest
yet immensely moving, his portraits of ordinary
people tremble at the edge of revelation,
conveying the beauty of our shared existence
in a way that goes beyond words.
Evans’ practice will be at the centre of an
exhibition charting his enduring effects on
Australian art today, with works by David
Chesworth and Sonia Leber; Destiny Deacon
and Virginia Fraser; Simryn Gill; Ponch
Hawkes; Louis Porter; Patrick Pound; Charlie
Sofo and David Wadelton responding through
photography, video and the found image.

Long after the instant of their taking, the silent,
sublime images of documentary photographer
Walker Evans (1903 —1975) continue to
resonate. His influence can be traced in the
work of Australian artists today, who build upon
his ground-breaking legacy.
