Fresh from his acclaimed 2015 Dark Twin tour, Zubin Kanga returns in a program of newly commissioned works by some of the hottest composers from Australia and Europe. 3D motion sensors shape the sounds of Patrick Nunn’s Boulez-meets-The-Matrix Morphosis, while Benjamin Carey’s Taking the Auspices features a duet with an artificial intelligence that imitates the flocking of birds. Acclaimed as Australia’s pre-eminent exponent of contemporary repertoire, London-based pianist Zubin Kanga is one of the most compelling figures in the global musical landscape today. Screws, rubber, plastic and other materials invade the piano to transform it into a one-man orchestra of kaleidoscopic colours, full of gongs, bells and drums. Combining Indian philosophy and aesthetics, the sounds of Indonesian gamelan and the spirit of American post-war experimental music, it is both deep meditation and cosmic dance.
