41 PRO INSTALLER NOVEMBER 2013 PRO PRODUCTS @proinstaller1 WHAT’S IN YOUR BAG? PRO Installer has teamed up with celebrity builder Craig Philips to cover industry topics relevant to you. Before capturing the nation’s hearts to win the first series of Big Brother, Craig Phillips was a successful self-made entrepreneur who ran a construction business throughout the 1990’s. Craig’s expertise and warm personality has seen him become one of the most sought after construction and DIY experts on television and he is also the ambassador for leading Swedish workwear provider Blåkläder. This month Craig is looking at tools and the essentials in an installer’s tool bag… “It is often said that a workman is only as good as his tools so it’s important that you know exactly which tools will help you to perform at your very best. I’m going to give you some advice on the right gear for the job from start to finish. Removal of the window As you know, this part of the job is just as important as installing the new window so you need to be prepared with even the simplest of things. Your gloves can often get overlooked but a good quality pair of heavy duty gloves will ensure that you have the right grip and accuracy when working. You don’t want any holes or extra material gathering round your fingers! A crosscut saw can help you to cut through the remaining mullion and transom frame members leaving you free to lever the framework away from the plaster line. The best way to do this with minimum disturbance is with a nail bar. A standard masonry chisel can easily then help to remove any projecting cement accumulations. • Very quick turnaround • 25mm and 35mm poly • All rafter cappings scribed and pre-cut - ready to fit • All roofs checked sleaved and bubble wrapped for safe delivery • Free delivery to site • White, Oak, Rosewood, and Mahogany Artisan Colours £456 £1068 £908 Blue Active ‘A workman is only as good as his tools’ Fitting the new window You have tools that you use day in day out for all jobs, not just windows, but these can become worn and your favourite tool could no longer be doing the job to its best! Items such as your gloves, screw drivers and drill bits, to name a few, should be checked for wear and tear and replaced if need be. Packers are very handy when fitting windows, stock up and use the plastic ones for levelling the cill and wedging the window into position and the glass packers to square up where necessary but make sure you don’t bend the framework by over packing. As an installer you will have found that a variety of drill bits are needed. These including a 3mm pilot drill, 8mm HSS drill, 8mm masonry drill and 5mm clearance along with your trusty hand drill and hammer drill. These are just a number of tools needed but the list goes on, other essentials you should have in your tool box include a light hammer, spirit level, skeleton gun and spatula. Even the smallest things can be important and should not be ignored when updating and maintaining your tools. You can’t do a job without them!” Craig is the official brand ambassador for Blåkläder workwear.
