Sad loss to
joinery industry
The British Woodworking
Federation (BWF) is mourning
another serious loss to the
joinery industry this year,
with the death of its senior
vice president and chairman
for Scotland, Gordon Nelson.
Gordon passed away, aged 74.
Gordon began his
career in the joinery industry almost
50 years ago as
Northern Field Sales
Manager for Gliksten
Doors, selling flush
doors and doorsets.
In 1974, Gordon
took on the position
of Sales and Marketing Director for
Rothervale Joinery
in Sheffield. Gordon
became well known
within the industry,
helping to grow the
company’s sales to
eventually become
one of the largest in
the industry.
In 1987 Gordon bravely took the decision to
invest in a management
buyout of Sarek Joinery
from its Swedish private
equity owner. He helped
to grow the business to a
£30 million organisation
with operating profits of
£3 million. The success
of the business lead to
interest from Norcross
plc. The business was
acquired by Norcross plc
at the end of 1988 and
subsequently the organisation was merged with
Crosby Doors to form
Crosby-Sarek. At the time
of the merger, annual
sales were in e xcess of
£80 million.
Gordon remained in
the newly formed company for a year before
leaving to form his own
company, Eurojoinery. Gordon also acted
for a time as the Sales
Director for J B Kind, a
door distributor in the
Midlands.
Iain McIlwee, chief
executive of the BWF,
said: “Gordon had been
an active and enthusiastic member of the BWF
for some years. Only last
year he was made the
chairman of our newly
formed Scottish division
and had already started
to develop some very
good contacts and new
membership for the BWF
north of the border. He
was a passionate Scotsman and a senior leader
in his Highland clan,
Clan Gunn. His immense
industry experience,
sound strategic thinking
and sense of fun will
be greatly missed by all
who knew him.”
Trade fabricator Astraseal is now offering Eurocell’s Aspect
bi-folding door to its
extensive PVCu selection.
The Aspect has ultra-slim
frames and uninterrupted
sightlines, and was specifically designed to integrate
indoor and outdoor spaces
with its 90% clear opening. As the first bi-fold
to receive both BBA and
Secured by Design PAS24
accreditation, the Aspect
also delivers exceptional security, equipped with both
concealed bottom rollers
and anti-jemmy pins as well
as an innovative D-handle
that folds flat when not
in use. Its patented trim
conceals unattractive gasket
lines, and thanks to Astraseal’s in-house spray facility
it can be finished in any
RAL colour.
“We’re delighted to be
able to offer such a versatile and respected product,”
said Astraseal Marketing
Manager Zac Nedimovic.
“As ever with Eurocell, the
Aspect allows us to offer
an extremely high-quality
product at a competitive
price-point – and gives installers the chance to differentiate their own product
portfolio in an increasingly
competitive market. Especially given the huge range
of colour options we’re
able to provide the Aspect
in, it’s the perfect choice to
give an edge and win over
style-conscious end users.”
Aside from the Aspect
system, Astraseal now offers other Eurocell products
including the Modus system, the Eurologik 70mm
system, the Charisma sash
window and the Skypod
Skylight system.
A long-time REHAU
fabricator, the company
continues to sell the full
range of REHAU doors and
windows, alongside Synseal
vertical sliders and inline
sliders. Astraseal is also a
major aluminium fabricator,
currently producing doors,

and curtain walling using
both Reynaers and Smarts

constructs conservatories
in-house to ensure all components fit together correctly, before disassembling
them and shipping them to
the customer.
Astraseal operates from its
