Experts say the video game Minecraft could be the key to attracting more young people to the construction industry. A new competition has demonstrated the enormous potential the computer gamecould have for the future of the construction industry. The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) held a contest to design a building on the popular game. There were 77 entrants and the winner was Guy MacDonnell, who works for Interserve Construction as a quantity surveyor. He built the CCTV Tower in Beijing, China, in painstaking detail inside and out and his work received more than half of the votes (52.9%) that were cast online. To mark International Construction Management Day (March 9), the CIOB challenged people to recreate either the CCTV Tower, the Shard in London, Kuala Lumpur’s Petronas Towers, the Sydney Opera House or the Houses of Parliament in London within Minecraft. MacDonnell has been playing around with the game ever since it was first available. Since it began, millions of people of all ages have used it to create their own build- ings, but it also allows them to explore, gather resources and fight rivals online. MacDonnell chose the CCTV Tower as he felt it was the best option in terms of using Minecraft to create an “elaborate interior”. He used the building’s plans and elevations to achieve his extremely detailed representation. But Minecraft is not just about recreating digitally what has already been made as it gives users even greater freedom to create something new, as unlike Arup, the company that built the CCTV Tower, they are not restricted by gravity, MacDonnell says. The CIOB and the Construction Industry Training Board (CITB) are keen to attract more young people to learn construction skills. It is thought that the huge interest in Minecraft could be a way of getting more of them interested in careers in the industry. MacDonnell used his considerable experience to recreate the building but he says anyone can use the game, experiment and develop creations of their own.
