Roads scheme to create
construction jobs
and boost economy
More than £1.3 billion is to be ploughed into improving some of the
country’s most important motorways, ministers have announced.
Highways England has
launched talks with key
suppliers and stakeholders
to decide how the money can
best be used to repair major
roads across Yorkshire and
the Humber between now
and 2020.
It is hoped the funding, part of
the £15 billion Road Investment
Strategy, will help to boost the
region’s economy and create jobs
in areas like construction.
Transport Secretary Patrick
McLoughlin said the initiative
would enhance road travel and
also further government efforts to
turn the north of England into an
economic powerhouse.
“Roads are key to our nation’s
prosperity. That’s why, as part of
our long-term economy plan, we
are making the biggest investment in roads in a generation,”
he said.
“The £1.3 billion investment in
Yorkshire and the Humber over
the next five years will significantly improve journeys and help
create jobs.
“Through schemes like these we
are building the Northern Powerhouse and creating opportunities
for hardworking people across the
nation.”
As part of the project, major
improvements will be carried out
on the A1, M62, M1, A63, A180
and A628.
Junctions will be upgraded and
extra lanes added, while smart
motorways will be installed and
measures to reduce congestion
implemented.

under construction in Yorkshire
