Preventing Drink Driving in Africa | Page 4

Dear Reader, UNECE, UNECA, and IARD are delighted to share this e-book. It is a key outcome of our collaboration to jointly deliver the workshop on United Nations Road Safety Conventions and Approaches to Preventing Drink Driving in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on 12-13 November 2014. The workshop featured briefings for government officials on the United Nations road safety legal instruments, addressed effective approaches to preventing drink driving, and reviewed progress on the implementation of the African Road Safety Action Plan. Importantly, the event also offered an opportunity for valuable dialogue among Member State representatives, non-governmental organisations and United Nations experts on these significant topics. We are pleased to report that more than 40 delegates participated in the workshop, including representatives of two United Nations regional commissions, Government Ministries, National Road Safety Authorities and Councils and non-governmental organisations. The presentations and discourse proved true to our collective intention of raising awareness of United Nations road safety agreements and reducing drink driving across the African continent. The event also represented an extension of a broader collaboration between UNECE and IARD, and focused on engaging governments outside of Europe in discussions of the United Nations road safety legal instruments and effective approaches to preventing drink driving. Thank you for taking the time to read this publication. We hope that you will join us in our mission to combine local knowledge and priorities and global good practices in the advancement of road traffic safety in Europe, Africa and beyond. Sincerely, Dr. Eva Molnar Mr. Brett Bivans Director, UNECE Transport Division 4 Mr. Stephen Karingi Director, UNECA Regional Integration and Trade Division Senior Vice President, IARD 5
