be revealed with time and negative experiences.

So how do entrepreneurs or artists protect themselves from leeches?

1. Put potential leeches through “tests”: Similar to how one would purposely divulge a “secret” to a suspected blabber-mouthing friend and then wait to see if the “secret” later emerged, design a test for those whose intentions you are unsure of. If they use the infamous “let’s network” line, give them a small task to see if their aptitude and professionalism is up to par. Do not divulge proprietary information about your business or insight into your upcoming projects until you are sure you are dealing with someone who genuinely wants to align with your brand for genuine reasons.

2. Be selective with your brain-picking sessions: When you’re knowledgeable in a certain area, it’s only natural that others seek you out for advice and inquire about "picking your brain.” This is a good sign; it means that you are respected in your field and that converting your knowledge into some sort of teaching program may be possible. However, you must not stretch yourself too thin or put yourself in a situation where you feel like you’re being used. Only you can determine when you have crossed the line from feeling helpful to feeling used. Don’t be afraid to set limits and say no.

3.Look for telltale signs: One major indication that you are dealing with a leech is when the individual offers help or support, but cannot explain exactly how this help will contribute to your overall goal, business or project. The leech’s skill set has nothing to do with your particular field or business, and you cannot see an obvious connection between the two. These people are most likely “sponges.” When you meet these “let’s collaborate” types, the best thing to do is immediately run.
