Is Tutoring Worth It?
To tutor or not to tutor? That is the question. Today, a vast majority
of students receive some form of help outside the classroom, but
should you hire a tutor for your child?
Dr. Monica M. Powell is an Academic Coaching Consultant, and she shared her
thoughts on why the additional support and help from an academic coach can benefit
almost any student and how her approach differs from traditional tutoring.
“Our coaching approach improves achievement and overall grade improvement/performance for your student long term by focusing on identified areas and treating the whole
student’s learning process much like a coach in sports works with improving skills for the
whole athlete,” she said. “Personalized academic coaching and tutoring delivers proven
results because we identify gaps in learning, while addressing study skills and habits, organization, planning, test preparation in advance of tests (not just the night before), and
test-taking strategies to maximize test scores. Conventional tutoring often focuses on a
particular subject and often produces short-term results, for instance passing a particular
test or class.”
What are the benefits of tutoring or academic coaching?
“It teaches and improves academic skills like test preparation, note-taking,
reading, active studying and time management.”
