My teen is beating himself up
after making mistakes at a game.
How do I help him?
In sports as in life, we all make mistakes. The best
players at the highest levels of their sports still make
mistakes. We can choose to get upset and see the
mistakes as failures, or we can choose to see those
mistakes as what they really are. Those mistakes are
indicators of what we need to work on to become a
better player.
My young teen still gets
emotional during a game when
they make a mistake, how do I
help them shake it off?
Composure is a key ingredient for a successful athlete.
Losing your cool is counter productive for everyone
except the opposition. Kids get emotional because they
see mistakes as failures. Parents need to teach their
children that the only real failure is the failure to try.
My teen is over-confident and doesn’t
think they need to practice in the off-season.
How do I help them keep the end
goal in mind?

cessful they need to set goals and commit to them. Commitment is about doing something every day that brings
them closer to their ultimate goal. Parents should sit down with
their teen to set one specific ultimate goal. Next help your teen set short-term,
weekly goals to improve targeted areas such as speed, strength, agility, etc. Your
teen needs a good work ethic and a passion for what he or she is trying to accomplish. Desire creates the energy to work. The work produces results.
