IMAGE BY NIKK I P. PHOTOGRAPHY parent to parent resources My teen is beating himself up after making mistakes at a game. How do I help him? In sports as in life, we all make mistakes. The best players at the highest levels of their sports still make mistakes. We can choose to get upset and see the mistakes as failures, or we can choose to see those mistakes as what they really are. Those mistakes are indicators of what we need to work on to become a better player. My young teen still gets emotional during a game when they make a mistake, how do I help them shake it off? Composure is a key ingredient for a successful athlete. Losing your cool is counter productive for everyone except the opposition. Kids get emotional because they see mistakes as failures. Parents need to teach their children that the only real failure is the failure to try.  My teen is over-confident and doesn’t think they need to practice in the off-season. How do I help them keep the end goal in mind? Not everyone takes their sport section in future seriously, but for those who truly aspire to be successful, issues of a strong work ethic is a necessity. For athletes to be sucPotential. cessful they need to set goals and commit to them. Commitment is about doing something every day that brings them closer to their ultimate goal. Parents should sit down with their teen to set one specific ultimate goal. Next help your teen set short-term, weekly goals to improve targeted areas such as speed, strength, agility, etc. Your teen needs a good work ethic and a passion for what he or she is trying to accomplish. Desire creates the energy to work. The work produces results.  Steve has trained more than 200 student athletes.
