her story
Carley’s been dancing since she was two years old. “My mom
was a dancer and I just fell in love with it.” Carley dances at
Birmingham Dance Theatre and has danced competitively for
the past five years. “I compete in Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary
and Lyrical.” She’s won the “Best Work Ethic” at her dance
studio and has also won several other awards with her dance
school across the Southeast including: first place overall at Open
Call in Atlanta, Ga.; and won the Judges Choice award at West
Coast Dance Explosion in Greenville, S.C. Carley’s had many
supporters that helped push her to be better. “My jazz teacher has
been a huge inspiration to me. She doesn’t accept anything but
our best. She is someone you know is in your corner and wants
the best for you.”
healthy interests
Carley participates in the Undivided Club and First Priority,
which both have a spiritual foundation. Carley’s also learning the
basics of the healthcare field through being a part of the Health
and Science Academy at Hoover High School.
Carley has an interest in the medical field but generally just
wants to prosper and make an impact on others. “I want to be
remembered as a friend to everyone and someone that followed
their heart and helped others along the way.”
PG (parental guidance) rating
“I have been lucky and had lots of people give me good advice in
my life. I guess what I have learned from all of them is be a good
person and work hard and good things can happen. I am proud
that my family has always been there for me and that I can always
count on them to be there for me.”

parents’ perspective
David and Kim Powell recognize the achieving
spirit that’s within their daughter. “Carley has
many great qualities, but one thing that comes to
our mind is her focus and work ethic. Carley sets
goals for herself and works hard to try and achieve
them.” They support her and encourage her to
pursue her own interests.
Carley’s ambitious nature is complemented by
the amount of care she has for others. “I just want
to help people, in the medical field or not.”
parent-to-parent
“Look for the good in others and the positives
in even difficult situations. Encourage them
to do their best in anything they choose to do and to
have fun doing it.” -Kim Powell
