& More 2015
EDITOR’S NOTE
“Omnia Mutantur nos et mutamur in illis”
“A
ll things change and we change with them”... for most of us if things never changed
it would mean that we were permanently standing still. Unlike statues, we are
humans and change is inherent to our lives; it’s the process of evolution that brings
us through the years and it is apparent everywhere. There is no aspect of our daily lives
that is immune to change... think back to the “brick” which was the first cell phone, and the
almost credit card sized device we call a phone these days, when travel took months instead
of hours, when dwellings were caves and stand up now and gaze at a city skyline with
structures 100+ stories in height; this is CHANGE and for the most part it has impacted our
lives positively. Would we go back to the “brick” or the steamship or the cave? Probably not,
as we have evolved so have the things around us and all of these changes have brought a
certain ease to contemporary life. Change is very evident too in the sport of polo, initially a
training method for the King’s elite cavalry, those matches were reminiscent of a battle with
up to 100+ men to a side supposedly playing with the heads of their enemies. As mounted
armies swept back and forth across Central Asia conquering and re-conquering, polo was
adopted as the most noble of pastimes by the Kings and Emperors, Shahs and Sultans, Khans
and Caliphs of the ancient Persians, Arabs, Mughals, Mongols and Chinese. It was for this
reason it became known across the lands as the “Game of Kings”. These days Instead of 100+
men to a side it is now 4, and instead of being the preserve of just Royalty, it is now a
recreational game played by professionals and amateurs in over 70 countries around the
world. Whilst some might still consider the game “barbaric” as it is a full contact sport, for
most it is now a rather genteel past-time; we no longer play with the heads of our enemies,
but rather a compressed white plastic ball. And a game which was once only played
exclusively on grass, is now played on snow and sand. See our Beach Polo editorial (Page 16).
This issue of Polo & More is all about change... our cover takes a fashion forward step away from the traditional polo magazine cover, after all we
are Polo & More. Our polo pages take an in-depth look at the local polo season, with features on the mixed fortunes of old friends Villages (Page
32), Cheshire (Page 38) and Hickstead (Page 54) and newer friends EFG Haryana (Page 62) as they visited our shores during the season.
Again change was evident when rank outsiders “SNAKEBITE” hoisted the First Citizens Barbados Open trophy, over favourites who
had dominated this tournament since its inception. And our “Postcards From The Edge” was certainly atypical; as we went from land to sea and
followed 4 polo players who took it upon themselves to swap their polo ponies for a row boat to cross the mighty Atlantic (Page 80).
In our & More section we go native with an intercontinental edge; as we feature New York based Platinum award winning Barbados Songstress
Shontelle; add a soupçon of French flavour with our stop at Un Dimanche à Paris La Suite, a concept store in Limegrove, whose panache
transports us all to Southern France from the moment we saunter through the doors (Page 114); and finally take a peek through the windows
of “Footprints” a very “un-Barbados” beachfront villa where luxury & simplicity meet, and the “fuss” is all about British “Superstar” Designer
Kelly Hoppen, who lends her elegant style, clean lines and signature modern interiors (Page104).
Our fashion pages are an ecclectic and inspirational nod to the optimism of rebirth, as the new Spring/Summer season dawns on us (Page 135).
Last of all but not least for the first time, our “Last Word” is given by a female player; Sarah Wiseman, one of Britain’s most talented and
highest handicapped lady players and a firm favourite in Barbados, where she visits regularly for
the popular “Battle of the Sexes” (Page 144).
I hope you enjoy this edition, with change in mind from our next edition we will be becoming Polo
& More (Caribbean) spreading our wings to encompass other destinations in the region such as
Jamaica & the Dominican Republic and the fledgling efforts of Haiti.
We realise that advertisers have a choice of where they spend their ever decreasing advertising
dollars and readers have a choice of what they read in an over saturated print media market, so
we are eternally grateful to our advertisers old and new... and our readers who continue to make this
all so worthwhile. We are excited about our approaching 10th anniversary in 2016, as we embrace
the changes ahead
