PLUS MODEL MAGAZINE January 2015 Issue | Page 102

@siacoldchillin Being 32 and still wanting to model, what avenues do I still have in my favor? Commercial modeling is a great avenue for you. Commercial models are the people you see on TV and ads for anything from selling furniture and medication to buying a car. You also will see them in magazine ads and national campaigns. Research your area for commercial agencies and make an appointment to see an agent. Good luck! @silva_cole Plus size modeling gives the illusion that curvy women have broken into the modeling world, however they still apply the narrow mentality and standards of the zero size modeling. As plus side models range in size 10 - 20, all figures ‘above’ should do what then? The truth is that MOST working models are size 12 - 16. Some are smaller (as small as size 6) and a few are curvier up to size 18. We have been advocates for size diversity in our industry and believe plus size models should be representative of the women they are marketing to, and we have seen SOME change but not significant. How can we change this? Plus size women need to stop being ashamed of being “plus size”. Curvy is a SHAPE and anyone can be curvy, but being a fierce and proud plus size woman can create change in our industry. Plus size women need to use their voice. If you see something you don’t like, use your voice. Every brand and designer is begging for your hard earned dollars. They should be listening to YOU!. Go to their social media pages and write to their corporate office. If you do not feel like you are being marketed to with images of models that adequately represent you, tell them. If enough women do this, they will HAVE to start making changes. Don’t give up. Just because you don’t see change right away does not mean you are not being heard. Praise and support those companies that are listening to you and embracing plus size women.
