Top West Coast Players
T
he Southern California Classic took place June 17-20
under beautiful sunny skies at the Bobby Riggs Tennis
Center in Encinitas. Many 2015 National Gold Medalists
were in attendance including Wes Gabrielsen, Marcin
Rozpedski, Scott Lennan, Christine Barksdale, Karen Gysin,
Joy Leising, Hilary Marold and Sarah Ansboury.
In the Men’s Open Doubles, Rozpedski and Morgan
Evans teamed up to take the Gold by defeating Wes
Gabrielsen and Matt Staub in a much-anticipated match by
the crowd of 150 spectators.
The Men’s Open Singles was grueling for silver medalist
Daniel Roditi, who worked his way through the back-draw
and played a total of seven matches to get his chance to
take on top-seeded Tyson McGuffin in the finals. The match
was tight all the way, buy McGuffin was fresh and strong
enough to pull out the victory.
The Women’s Open Doubles was won by Sarah Ansboury
and Christine Barksdale over the venerable local favorite
team of Jennifer Lucore and Alex Hamner.
Ansboury returned in the Mixed Open with Gabrielsen to
defeat Hamner and Scott Moore in the finals.
The tournament was run by the Dawson family, Callan,
Tyler, Steve and Jennifer, who went on to take 10 medals
including two golds (Callan with Morgan Evans in the
Men’s 19+ and Steve with Kevin Booth in the Men’s 60+). •
