Hauliers, Longthorne of Hebden, in the
Yorkshire Dales, was founded in 1928
by Herbert Longthorne, who bought a
Chevrolet wagon for carting coal and cattle
to local markets and thus founded a family
business. In the 1930s the Chevrolet was
replaced by a Bedford and Herbert was
joined by his son Ken, who eventually took
over running the business. In the 1960s the
fleet was expanded with Leylands and the
1970s saw the introduction of Volvo and
DAF tipper wagons. In 2000 Ken passed
the baton onto his three sons, Gordon,
Jonathan and Mark.

trucks may have to travel across very
uneven quarry floors and still tip safely
