Return to the market of the iconic British Gear Machine Giant: Sykes, now in CNC Sykes was formed in 1927 by a group of engineers and first established in a small works in Staines, Middlesex. W.E. Following significant demand and a large expansion the export trade of the main company was facilitated by the formation of subsidiaries in Canada and Australia and by the appointment of numerous established firms as agents. Sykes went from strength to strength, and is still a household name in the gear manufacturing industry. However, no new Sykes machines have been released for over 25 years. Now, Sykes returns to the world stage with state-ofthe-art CNC technology. We are building brand new Sykes machines for sale; supplying parts for Sykes machines; and retrofitting companies’ Sykes machines to order! We believe that there is an unrivalled power in British manufacturing brands and we believe in the revival of the British manufacturing industry. Farrell Engineering, based in Pinner, Harrow was started by Chan Chowdhry in 1983 after he realised there was an opportunity to export second 104 PECM Issue 16 hand machines to India. Although the company’s stock now includes most types of metalcutting machine, over the years it has become a specialist in the field of gear cutting and shaping. Manufacturers such as Gleason, Pfauter, Hurth and Buhler are regularly refurbished and sold. The company has created a resource of former Sykes employees and engineering companies that used to supply parts to the old Sykes firm to help with the refurbishment work. This knowledge base is what allows them to refurbish the machines to such a high quality and also to better market the upgraded machines Since Farreell Engineering embarked on the project 2 years ago it is going from strength to strength with 4 fully refurbished machines available for purchase today. The future for the company is looking extremely positive for the project with more machines to be finished over the next couple of years. “We hope to refurbish around 25-30 machines per year for the next 2 years thus significantly expanding the range we offer.” Mr. Chan Chowdhry – Managing Director of Farrell Engineering Farrell Engineering Ltd.
