On the Go with Jan Strimple
Dinner: For seafood, Driftwood in
North Oak Cliff is superb. For Italian,
make advanced reservations for a
much-coveted table at Lucia in Bishop
Arts. Oak or Abacus for consistently
great New American dining and a
prime steak at Nick and Sam’s is my
absolute favorite.
Food: Check out Phil Romano’s
restaurant concept launch pad commonly known as Trinity Groves.
Dessert place: La Duni on Oak Lawn
Day,weekend, or lengthy trips:
Tyler, TX, is the home of The Tyler
Rose Festival and its associated Rose
Museum. On rotating display are
many of the amazing gowns made
for the young women participating
in this annual pageant. The Queen’s
dresses, crown and scepter can easily run upwards of $40,000. It’s quite
something to see, while learning a bit
of history about the rose!
Great place to grab a coffee:
Ascension (the Design District) or any
of La Duni’s delicious coffee choices,
of which there are many!
Dear Clark in Uptown
for both color and cuts. They manage the manes of many of Dallas’s
top models.

Quick weekend getaway: The Hill
Country. Fredericksburg. Everything
slows to the pace of poured molasses
in that part of Texas!
If you’re here for several days, give Fort
Worth a day! From the western heritage
point of view, the Fort Worth Stockades
do two cattle drives each day. And the
National Cowgirl Museum and Hall of
Fame and The Cattle Raisers museums
are truly unique. The other side of
Fort Worth’s culture is beautifully
showcased in its Modern Art and
Kimbell Art Museums. I can’t think of
anything better than dinner at the tiny
Nonna Tatta (22 seats and they don’t
take reservations, natch!).
