ENTERTAINING Don’t Fear the Beer WRITTEN BY Tamberlyn Dobrowski PHOTOGRAPHY BY Taylor Mathis W While my friends and I typically prefer wine with our meals, I thought it would be fun to trade the usual white, red and bubbles for something new, a beer tasting dinner. First I needed an education, so I headed to Good Bottle Company in Charlotte, NC, and spoke to Chris Hunt, owner. Armed with an idea and a few recipes, he lead me into the world of craft beer and pairings. I read that with beer you do not have to go light to dark or light to heavy. You can mix it up. There are no hard and fast rules, but the advice most helpful was to keep sweet with sweet, and tart with tart. Try to keep your beer sweeter or tarter than the sweet or tart food being served. Most importantly, have fun tasting the selections and deciding what to serve with your meal. I found that tasting 2 or 3 different beers with each course was perfect for finding the best pairings. The real fun of the meal were the discussions after each course and at the end of dinner. A great time was had by all and I will definitely host another beer dinner and put the wine on the shelf for another night. OCTOBER / NOVEMBER 2013 55
