While the projects discussed above
may have laid a foundation for a sea
change in museum design, it was
arguably the 1997 opening of Frank
Gehry’s Guggenheim Museum,
Bilbao that was the true genesis of a
redefinition (albeit by deconstruction)
of the art museum. There may not be
a more polarizing architectural figure
than Gehry, but no one can argue that
Bilbao was an immediate and rather
shocking success, bringing economic
