Dysfunctional Fitness

“I’m going to get in shape!” How often
do we hear those words? All to often,
people resolve to get in shape without knowing where they are starting
from. Anyone can jump into a fitness
class, or bootcamp, and start working
out, but what if you haven’t trained
or worked out for years? One of the
leading causes for people dropping
out of training programs is injury. It’s
very easy to get caught up in the moment and forget to take the steps before we
engage in a workout program that will minimize the possibility of injury.
GET CLEARED BY YOUR PHYSICIAN. People
always check that they are cleared, but
I know for a fact that times they just assume they are ok to workout. Especially
if you have any history of cardio-vascular disease in your family, make sure you
are cleared by a doctor before you workout.
MAKE SURE YOU RECEIVE A MOVEMENT SCREEN FROM A QUALIFIED CHIROPRACTOR
OR CERTIFIED FITNESS PROFESSIONAL. You
may have not heard of this, but it is
becoming an important step when it comes to overall wellness. Examples of a
movement screens are the Functional Movement Screen, often used by Fitness
trainers, and the Selective Functional Movement Screen used by chiropractors.
Both of these screens test your ability to move through specific ranges of motion,
safely and with or without pain. If you are unable to pass a movement screen,
then it’s important to address the dysfunction before you start a program.
If you take these steps before you start a training program, you will greatly
decrease the likelihood that an injury will derail your fitness goals. For more info
