Leaving the Whitney , proceed up Madison and head into Michael Werner Gallery to see early works by Peter Doig . His tranquil landscapes may be a welcome contrast to the conceptually driven art at the Whitney . Then pop into Gagosian Gallery to view the David Smith sculptures from his Forging Series . Produced in the mid- 1950s , these stainless steel sculptures are like line drawings in 3-D . Also at Gagosian are 15 photographs in William Eggelston ’ s Wedgewood Blue series . These gorgeous photographs of ephemeral clouds on a brilliant cerulean blue sky were originally taken by the Memphis native on a road trip from Georgia to Tennessee in 1979 .
