Many of the species , including redbud trees and perennial bluestar aster , thrive here and provide brilliant fall foliage . The aster was in peak bloom .
As you move through the Washington Grasslands , you will find tall grasses and the signature “ peel-up ” benches , which appear to grow out of the floor structure . The prairie dropseed was in full bloom , its ephemeral fronds blowing in the wind . Some of the original railroad tracks can be seen between the plantings , which were carefully selected by Piet Oudolf , world renowned garden designer . Many native grasses reflect the self-seeding plants that grew on the High Line in previous years . Concrete paving is ingenuously formed in narrow strips ; it not only keeps the path linear but adjusts to accommodate the structure as it meanders through the cityscape and softens the edge with plantings .
