North Greets South
The townhouse is set in the Turtle Bay Neighborhood in Midtown East with “ tree-lined streets and neighborhood friendliness ” as described by the neighborhood association . It is also home to the United Nations . “ The best part of New York is the diversity of the people , the client said . “ They come from everywhere to be here especially in Turtle Bay due to the UN .”
The home has elevators to both floors and strollers and bikes are easily accessible , adding to the ease of living in the city . On the second floor there are two private bedrooms for the family , with a small play area for their daughter . The first floor accommodates a grand hallway with two en suite bedrooms off a vestibule : one is used as a den , the other as guest room . The kitchen is intimate but large enough for a bistro table with a chair and high chair and attached to it is a gracious keeping room with a large window where the family dines daily .
In the entry , a Herve Van der Straeteninspired table was handcrafted by the client in his wood shop on their farm in Hickory , North Carolina . The table is a reminder of his own history of making hand-crafted wares . His mastery of furniture making is seen throughout the house . The tone of the home is that of artful restraint — subject matter very close to my own aesthetic — and the very few and purposeful pieces in the entry immediately tell the visitor that the home is a haven of tasteful choices and masterful pieces .
