Patricia Leighton , with her husband Del Geist , are such an inspiration . They recently have been commissioned by the Fashion District BID , a foundation created by the city and local businesses , to create five benches . The first is on 40th and Broadway .

The benches are rough-hewn slate slabs placed on stainless steel structures . The slate is from the Cambrian geological period , 500 million years . The steel base structures , in design , refer to the rigorous geometric architecture of the surrounding buildings on Broadway . The stone , by contrast , brings “ nature ” to the area .
