The fructose goes directly to the liver and increases the production of triglycerides and cholesterol . The glucose is rapidly absorbed causing spikes in blood glucose . These spikes have been shown to increase metabolic changes , driving increased appetite , diabetes and weight gain . These changes have also been implicated in cancer , dementia and heart disease . HFCS is found in sweetened drinks and sodas and in many processed foods . The easiest way to avoid HFCS is to avoid all processed foods .

In his books “ Ultra Metabolism ” and “ The Blood Sugar Solution ,” Mark Hyman , MD , refers to white carbohydrates ( white flour , white rice , white pasta and white sugar ) as “ The White Menace ” because of the havoc they wreak on your blood sugar . We once believed that a calorie was a calorie no matter what food source is consumed . New research , however , has shown that when these white carbohydrates are consumed they can spike blood sugar levels , which in turn spikes insulin levels . Elevated insulin levels increase fat deposition around our organs . The long term effect is a bigger mid-section and a greater risk of diabetes and heart disease . Unlike trans fats and high fructose corn syrup , completely eliminating white carbohydrates is probably not necessary , but significantly reducing them is beneficial . When they are consumed , they should be accompanied by other food groups such as protein , fiber and vegetables . When carbohydrates are mixed with these foods there is a reduction in the blood sugar levels after consumption .

The verdict is still not in , but there is plenty of evidence that artificial substances in your food may be harmful . The data is intriguing and many studies suggest that these artificial additives may be responsible for an array of disorders including , but not limited , to lupus , asthma , colitis , irritable bowel disease , among other autoimmune diseases .
