TO EACH THEIR OWN Every Exeter dorm has a unique culture and traditions they call their own. All-boys Cilley Hall has CilleyBall, a competitive four-person sport that falls somewhere between doubles tennis and volleyball. Bancroft Beach Day is how one tight-knit girls dorm kicks off the academic year. And once a year, the boys of Abbot Hall host Casino Night, an evening for all students to dress up, listen to jazz and gamble —with fake money. “ The proctors in my dorm were absolutely the biggest part of me coming in to my own here at Exeter. From the first day I met them I thought, ‘I want to be like these guys.’ What was really amazing was that even when I’d be upset about something that to them must have seemed trivial — I mean, they were seniors applying to college! They didn’t need to worry about how I was doing in a freshman writing seminar! But they would never belittle my struggles and they would say, ‘I remember what that was like, that was tough. Here’s some advice. Here’s how you get through it.’” MORGAN, senior, proctor (Washington, DC) 29
