Harvest Time In Aroostook County by Central Aroostook Chamber of Commerce Mother Nature is busy changing her palette as the seasons change in Aroostook County. The vibrant greens change to yellows, golds, reds, oranges and browns. Skies soften and temperatures drop at night. The pace of life for many picks up as farmers are busy gathering their crops and preparing the land for winter. For many that means harvesting this year’s crop and planting a replenishing crop. Home gardeners are busy as well, gathering and preserving their harvest. The working forests are also busy as harvesters work to gather the wood needed to produce a variety of products. If you are using the working forests for recreation, please be aware of the heavy equipment moving on the same roads. It is important that we respect all landowners who so generously allow recreational use of their land. This is a great time of year to visit the area. The rivers and lakes provide great boating. The wildlife and fowl are visible, and of course the foliage is changing daily. Even though there is an urgency to gather crops there is a calmness in the air. When planning your fall activities in Aroostook County, plan to take in some of the Hunters’ Breakfasts and events throughout the area. There are events throughout the area including a Haunted Woods Walk, Atlantic Brew & Wine Fest, Duck Banding & Refuge Week, Haunted Lantern Tours, Fall Foliage Tours aboard Molly the Trolley, Holiday Light Parades, Craft Fairs and more. Take time to visit the interesting exhibits at our numerous museums and galleries: Nylander Museum of Natural History, University of Maine at Presque Isle, Mark & Emily Turner Library, Caribou Historical Society Museum, Presque Isle Air Museum, to name a few that have regular hours. There are many more museums that can be visited by appointment. Aroostook County still has roadside stands with fresh produce available throughout the day. Fortunately, the honor system of trade is alive and well in this area. Join us for one of our events or just spend some time enjoying the beautiful scenery.
