Canadians among winners of World Sight Day challenge
Two Canadian schools of optometry clubs are among the three winners of travel stipends from Optometry Giving Sight for raising the most money during the 2016 World Sight Day Student Challenge .
The University of Montreal School of Optometry raised $ 10,000 through a variety of activities , including a bowling event , a “ 5-10 ” social event , a silent auction as well as sales of T-shirts , wristbands and custom water bottles .
The University of Waterloo School of Optometry and Vision Science raised the second-highest amount after organizing a “ Dining in the Dark ” event with a silent auction .
Students from 30 Schools of Optometry and pre-Optometry clubs across North America raised more than $ 40,000 as part of the 2016 World Sight Day Student Challenge . The money helps fund the development of optometry in underserved communities throughout the world .
“ Congratulations to these schools for winning the 2016 travel stipends ,” said Dr . Greg Pearl , Optometry Giving Sight Board member and past president of VOSH International .
“ They provide a great opportunity for these student leaders to experience firsthand the vital work being done to train and mentor people in underserved communities so that they can provide vision care services to people in need on an ongoing basis .”

Essilor ’ s Alive Summit training in Montreal : a great success
Essilor Canada is investing in training to support the development of its business partners across Canada with the presentation of Alive Summits and accompanying Roadshow .
Launched in Toronto in February , the winter tour continued in Montreal and ended in Vancouver . A second tour is planned for the fall , showcasing new topics .
The Toronto and Montreal events welcomed some 300 participants from the world of optics - optometrists , opticians , managers , owners and office staff .
About 150 people participated in the Montreal event , which allowed them to learn about Essilor ' s latest innovations , hear speakers on various subjects affecting the Canadian optical market and participate in a charitable activity .
The Friday evening Roadshow was open to all eyecare professionals and their teams . In a chic and dynamic environment , they were introduced to new technologies , products and sales tools .
On Saturday and Sunday , Varilux Xperience partners attended the Alive Summit , a series of conferences and workshops designed to assist them in growing their business and provide them with an overview of the latest trends and deployment solutions from the world of optics . The Latest Trends in Retail Stores , How to Interest the Millennials , How to Enhance the Customer Experience and The latest information on blue-violet light are some of the topics covered by seasoned speakers and experts .
The Vision Council educates about blue light , digital eye strain
The Vision Council sponsored the official health lounge at South by Southwest this spring .
The annual conglomerate of film , interactive media , music and health festivals and conferences took place in Austin , TX , and was intended to educate attending consumer media and conference-goers about the harmful side effects of blue light and digital eye strain , as well as the lens technology solutions available .
Titled “ The Time Out Lounge : Give Your Eyes a Break with The Vision Council ,” the lounge served as a space where attendees could unwind from the conference ’ s many events and panels in a comfortable seating area outfitted with charging stations , as well as select food and beverages . Vision Council staff engaged with visitors to spread messages outlined in its official blue light / digital eye strain report .
