TORIC EYES
Clinical and Patient Studies Highlight
Astigmatic-Patient Challenges SynergEyes,
Inc., the worldwide leader in hybrid contact lens
technology, has gleaned insight into the true
toric-patient experience through two recent
studies: a national study of 400 toric wearers,
and a clinical study of the four leading toric
brands. The clear, consistent insights reveal
the challenges astigmatic patients experience
with toric lenses, and their ongoing quest to find
more satisfactory vision correction options.
Eighty-two percent of toric wearers reveal that
they frequently experience issues with their toric
lenses. Of those, almost 40% experience issues
3+ times per day. The issues include blurry and
hazy vision, fluctuating, unstable and shifting
vision, rotating lenses and discomfort. Patients
feel irritated and frustrated with their toric lens
issues. They also feel worried, hindered and
helpless while experiencing lens-related vision
issues, especially since the vision issues often
occur while they are engaged in critical activities
such as driving, working, participating in
athletic activities, or simply laying down to
read or watch TV.
These feelings are not surprising, as clinical
data reveals even the leading toric lenses take
a long time to recover if misoriented. Seventy
four percent of misoriented toric lenses take
longer than 60 seconds to recover! Only 11%
recover within 30 seconds.2 As a result, 85%
of toric patients must manually reorient their
toric lenses to regain vision: rubbing eyes,
blinking a lot, sticking fingers in eyes and
pushing on eyelids.
Given their challenges with toric lenses, almost
half of toric wearers have tried multiple brands,
and 59% believe there must be a better lens for
astigmatism. Almost 3/4 of toric wearers would
pay more for a lens that eliminates their
toric issues.
