I’ve always had an interest in photography and when I retired from the British army, I started taking images for my wife’s public relations company, which specializes in equestrian sport. The rest, as they say, is history. How is equestrian photography challenging? The main challenge of photographing show jumping is knowing the course, and studying how the obstacles will be jumped. You can usually only shoot pictures of three or four jumps for each rider, as it’s impossible to be on all four sides of the stadium at once. Once you’ve decided which obstacles you are going to shoot, taking into consideration sponsors and backgrounds, even then you must make sure you’re in the right position to get the horses and rider at the right angle. You have to move quickly from jump to jump, just to get the shot. Turning the old saying on its head, when did you ever leap before you looked, and how did that turn out? I asked my wife to marry me after only knowing her for seven months, and I wouldn’t change a thing. So sometimes, just leap. It could be worth it!
