Cover photographer Todd Duncan has spent 18 years shooting
everything from portraits to advertising, but don’t call him a
dinosaur. Youthful and passionate, he is a wave of energy and
good laughs as he shoots the cover for OpenRoad Driver. We
think he captures the passion of Scott Hargrove just right.
My goal is to be in the 100th running of the Indianapolis 500 in
2016 and be Canada’s next IndyCar champion. I’ll be competing in
as many Indy Lights races as possible this year. I competed in the
season opener and after running up front, I look forward to getting
back behind the wheel.
You describe yourself as a storyteller. What’s the story
behind this cover shot?
Will you rejoin OpenRoad Racing to defend your Porsche
GT3 title this year?
What’s your style of photography?
I won’t be competing for the Canadian championship this year, but I
will be racing the OpenRoad Porsche GT3 Cup Car in select events.
Stay tuned for future announcements!
Recently you spent time with legendary Canadian Indy
500 winner, Jacques Villeneuve. What did he say that
will help you achieve your goals?
Jacques Villeneuve was great to talk to at the Area 27 track tour. He
provided a lot of insight on the design of the track and where he got
the inspiration. Having raced in almost every series imaginable, he
said he loved his experience in stock cars, which was a surprise to
me. I’ve never really looked into racing stock cars but I can imagine
how fun it would be racing side by side lap after lap. But overall he
said to give everything you have into reaching your goal and that’s
what I intend on doing.
Today is the day this young man gets his driver’s licence (laughing).
Well, that’s pushing it, but it’s a close sell!
Bright, saturated, bold character lighting, infused with
environmental portraiture. I’m not much of a studio shooter.
How have you experimented lately with your
photography?
As much as I gravitate towards using studio strobes on location in
order to maintain my visual signature, I am trying to work these
days on removing any ego out of my lighting, and shoot with very
minimal equipment. Free things up a bit more. We just shot for a
designer in Nevada this spring using only a 50mm lens and one 3x3
reflector, and only the sun. The results were stunning; yet the process
for me was incredibly anxiety inducing, being that I wasn’t able to
rely on any artificial lighting.
Speaking of passion, what are you passionate about
today?
I think it’s probably the business behind photography, and trying
to mentor new photographers who want to partake in this amazing
art form as a full-time profession. It’s vital that we teach our fellow
photographers the importance of valuing our craft, so that the
clients can value our work.
