FROM WORKING IN YOUR DAD’S FISHAND-CHIPS BUSINESS TO PERFORMING
ON STAGE WITH HERBIE HANCOCK AND
THE STONES, DO YOU FEEL THAT YOU’VE
ACHIEVED WHAT YOU SET OUT TO DO?
You’ve always got to keep your eyes open. Watch
people, speak to people. That’s how you grow.
But as far as aspirations go in terms of where I can
go next, I think I’ve fulfilled something. Obviously
I get the chance to play to more people. But I
can’t remember ever saying to myself: ‘Oh, I want
to do that one day.’ Bigger isn’t always better. I
don’t go to big shows. I try to catch artists in their
most intimate settings..
DO YOU FEEL THAT’S WHAT YOU’VE
OFFERED YOUR SOUTH AFRICAN FANS AT
KIRSTENBOSCH WHEN YOU PLAYED THERE
[ON 18TH AND 19TH MARCH 2015]?
That’s what was interesting about playing at
Kirstenbosch. There was a nice marriage of
grandeur and intimacy. Every one scattered
across the grass… there’s a real charm about that. I felt comfortable, very quickly.
I didn’t expect Africa to be so relaxed.
