That night, in the Hotel Europa, in my dreams, I twirled
with the spinning Sevillanas from the Salamandra club. Still
twirling in that dream, I descended into the sounds of
another language and my imaginations of what I could
only intuit to be Morocco. I woke up stunned since I had
never been to Morocco and yet the dream was as intense
as if I had lived it with my own body. I went downstairs and,
still ?ustered, found myself telling the gentleman behind
the front desk of the dream.
He told me about the small distance between Seville and
Morocco, some four or ?ve hours away. The short distance
explained the air ?oating up here from North Africa, he
said. Then, fueling my intrigue, he gave me a map and wrote
down ‘San Sebastian’, the name of the bus station, from
which buses leave for the coastal city of Algeciras. In Algeciras,
the port in the South of Spain, ferries leave for Tangiers,
Morocco. Back in my room, I began to savor the possibility
of going to North Africa. My excitement increased and
kept me up until the sun came out.

By morning I was already oriented toward the south. I made
