40 Have a smash cake Write a letter This has been an American first birthday tradition for some time, and has only recently become popular here. The idea is that, in addition to the real first birthday cake that is sliced and served, there is a smaller decorated cake put in front of the birthday child and they’re given free reign to make a grab for it, stick their hands (or faces!) in and make an almighty mess – this is a pure photo opportunity! Find some time to sit and write a letter to your one-year-old. Make a note of some of your favourite memories from the past year, and how you have felt as a parent – or even what you hope the next year will bring. There is no formula, just write from your heart. Then seal the letter and put it in a memory box for your little one to read when they are older. Tell us your story!
