Af ter the Sab bath , at dawn on the first day of the week , Mary Mag da lene and the oth er Mary went to look at the tomb .

There was a vi o lent earth quake , for an an gel of the Lord came down from heav en and , go ing to the tomb , rolled back the stone and sat on it . 3 His ap pear ance was like light ning , and his clothes were white as snow . 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and be came like dead men .

The an gel said to the wom en , “ Do not be afraid , for I know that you are look ing for Jesus , who was cru ci fied . 6 He is not here ; he has ris en , just as he said . Come and see the place where he lay . 7 Then go quick ly and tell his dis ci ples : ‘ He has ris en from the dead and is go ing ahead of you into Gal i lee . There you will see him .’ Now I have told you .”

So the wom en hur ried away from the tomb , afraid yet filled with joy , and ran to tell his disci ples . 9 Sud den ly Jesus met them . “ Greet ings ,” he said . They came to him , clasped his feet and wor shiped him . 10 Then Jesus said to them , “ Do not be afraid . Go and tell my broth ers to go to Gal i lee ; there they will see me .”
The Guards ’ Report

While the wom en were on their way , some of the guards went into the city and re port ed to the chief priests ev ery thing that had hap pened .

When the chief priests had met with the el ders and de vised a plan , they gave the sol diers a large sum of mon ey , 13 tell ing them , “ You are to say , ‘ His dis ci ples came dur ing the night and stole him away while we were asleep .’ 14 If this re port gets to the gov er nor , we will sat is fy him and keep you out of trou ble .” 15 So the sol diers took the mon ey and did as they were in struct ed . And this story has been wide ly cir cu lat ed among the Jews to this very day .

Then the elev en dis ci ples went to Gal i lee , to the moun tain where Jesus had told them to go .

When they saw him , they wor shiped him ; but some doubt ed . 18 Then Jesus came to them and said , “ All au thor i ty in heav en and on earth has been giv en to me . 19 There fore go and make dis ciples of all na tions , bap tiz ing them in the name of the Fa ther and of the Son and of the Holy Spir it ,
20 and teach ing them to obey ev ery thing I have com mand ed you . And sure ly I am with you al ways , to the very end of the age .” wax or clay between the stone and the tomb entrance and then stamping it with an imperial insignia ( see Da 6:17 and note .)
28:1 – 10 In fulfillment of his predictions , Jesus conquers the grave and rises to new life ( compare Isa 53:10 and note ; 53:12 and note ).
28:1 After the Sabbath Jews calculated the Sabbath from sundown on Friday night to sundown on Saturday night . During that time , no one could do any work . first day of the week Refers to Sunday . See note on Lk 24:1 . 28:4 became like dead men Describes a typical response to a divine encounter ( compare Rev 1:17 ). 28:6 he has risen The Greek verb used here is passive , indicating an act of God . just as he said See Mt 16:21 ; 17:9,23 ; 20:19 ; 26:32 . 28:9 Jesus met them . “ Greetings ,” he said The women are the first to encounter the risen Christ . The Greek word Jesus speaks here is an expression of wellbeing or gladness . See the table “ Resurrection Appearances of Jesus ” on p . 1896 . 28:10 my brothers Despite the disciples ’ earlier abandonment of him ( 26:56,69 – 75 ), Jesus addresses them with a term of utmost endearment .
28:11 – 15 The chief priests , who were involved in Jewish religious government , bribe the Roman soldiers to spread a false report about Jesus ’ disciples stealing his body .
28:14 keep you out of trouble The soldiers would have faced punishment — ​perhaps death — ​because they failed in their duty to secure the tomb .
28:16 – 20 Jesus commissions his disciples to spread the good news and make disciples throughout the whole earth .
28:16 the mountain where Jesus had told them Perhaps the mountain where Jesus was transfigured ( see note on 17:1 ). 28:17 some doubted The Greek verb used here implies hesitation or indecision , rather than unbelief . The disciples are struggling to comprehend what they are witnessing . 28:18 All authority in heaven and on earth The resurrection is the ultimate validation of Jesus ’ divine authority ( compare 12:38 – 40 ; Eph 1:20 – 23 ). He extends this authority to his disciples to continue the work of the kingdom of heaven . Matthew emphasizes this theme throughout his Gospel ( e . g ., Mt 7:29 ; 9:6 ; 21:23 ). Jesus has repeatedly demonstrated his authority over all things — ​the human body , demons , natural elements ( such as wind and water ), the Sabbath , sin and even death . 28:19 baptizing A public signal of identification with Jesus and his kingdom ( compare 3:11 – 17 ). 28:20 to the very end of the age Marked by Jesus ’ second coming .
