12.6 million Syrians (over half of the population) are in need of humanitarian assistance. 2.1 million Syrian refugees are registered in the Arab Region in Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon. Last March, UN Women closed the third phase of a regional programme of economic empowerment for women as means to protect refugee families against poverty, protect women against violence and foster social cohesion between refugee and host communities. The programme began in 2014 and covered Egypt, Iraq, Jordan and Lebanon.
