Selhíišče .
as an editor , I haven ’ t been with News from Native California for very long . But News has been with us all for quite a while . As of this March , it has been here for a full thirty years . The magazine was conceptualized by Malcolm Margolin , David Peri , and Vera Mae Frederickson . What has kept it alive all of these years are the tribal communities across the state who have refused to let go of their traditional ways .
Throughout 2017 , we will be celebrating “ Experiencing Thirty Years of Cultural Renewal .” And there is nothing we would love more than for all of you to celebrate with us !
This issue of the magazine is filled to the brim with reflections from people who have been involved with News throughout the years , including our wonderful and brilliant founder Malcolm Margolin . There are also lots of stories about milestones in cultural revitalization . The Advocates for Indigenous California Language Survival are celebrating their twenty-fifth anniversary . We have a story about the Cahuilla language revitalization program Paayish Neken . Cutcha Risling Baldy ( Hupa / Yurok / Karuk ) shares the story of the re-emergence of the Flower Dance . And there are other stories focused on the protection of our precious land and water . We have lost some important people in our communities and this issue we recognize the tremendous lives of Ronald Phillip Andrade ( La Jolla Band of Luiseño Indians ) and Viola E . Risling-Ryerson ( Hupa / Yurok / Karuk ) in “ With Respect .”
There ’ s a unique pride we as California Native people have . We have survived a tremendous amount of hardship over the centuries , but these hardships never eradicated us . The general public may not see California as Indian Country , but the truth is that this state is home to more Native American people than anywhere else in the country . We have emerged more than one hundred indigenous nations strong , and others from tribes across the continent have made this land their home as well . For the past thirty years , News from Native California has served as our evidence . It has documented our tenacity to thrive . It ’ s wonderful to know that we have a magazine that reflects our pride , celebrates our histories , reveals the beauty of our cultures , and encourages us all . Let ’ s look forward in optimism to the next three decades and beyond !
